FEE Internship Scheme

Building the next generation of sustainability professionals

FEE Head Office staff and interns (2025)

Eco-Campus is pleased to offer the FEE Internship Scheme, a structure providing students and early-career professionals with a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) within one of the world’s leading environmental education networks.

Eco-Campus is part of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) - a global organisation delivering internationally recognised sustainability programmes including Eco-Schools, Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE), Learning about Ecosystems and Forests (LEAF), and the tourism programmes Blue Flag and Green Key. Together, these initiatives support sustainability education and action in more than 85 countries worldwide.

As part of the newly restructured Eco-Campus programme, this internship scheme has been designed to support young professionals to develop the green skills, professional competencies, and systems-level understanding needed to drive sustainability in education, policy, organisations, and industry.

Meet our interns

From an internship at FEE to sustainability professional

Katharina Sophie Ingebrand

“After completing my M.Sc. in Political Science, I joined Green Key and Blue Flag as an intern in January 2024 to gain hands-on experience with sustainability in the tourism sector. During my internship, I worked on the revision of the Blue Flag criteria and supported the administration of Green Key hotels, which gave me valuable insight into how sustainability standards are developed and implemented in practice. The experience allowed me to better understand the link between policy, sustainability standards, and real-world application, and strengthened my interest in working at the intersection of sustainability and international cooperation.”

“I joined FEE as an Eco-Schools intern after completing my Master’s degree in Design for Sustainable Innovation. During my internship, I supported research activities related to sustainability education by following up on global case studies and analysing examples from different countries. I contributed to the development of handbooks by helping translate research insights into practical resources and participated in workshops designed to test and refine these materials. Working with diverse international examples gave me a deeper understanding of how sustainability practices can be adapted across different contexts. The experience strengthened my skills in research, analysis, and collaborative knowledge development within global sustainability initiatives.”

“While completing my Master’s degree in 2024, I joined the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) as an intern, keen to gain first-hand insight into how an international environmental NGO operates. As part of the Eco-Campus team, and working in a remote, international setting, I supported early research and comparison of sustainability and campus accreditation frameworks. This contributed to initial discussions on how the new Eco-Campus programme could align with the UNESCO Green School Quality Standard (GSQS) within the broader Greening Education Programme (GEP).

The experience strengthened my analytical and strategic thinking skills and provided a behind-the-scenes perspective on how sustainability education initiatives take shape internationally. It continues to inform my work today, and I remain connected to the FEE community through ongoing collaboration in my new role with the Green Growth Asia Foundation, operator of FEE programmes in Malaysia.”

"I joined FEE as a YRE intern during the final year of my undergraduate degree in Political Science, looking to put theory into practice for the first time in international environmental projects.  During this experience, I had the opportunity to develop skills across a variety of tasks: project coordination, data analysis, video editing and so on. The team made sure to involve me in different projects to develop professional and transferable skills and trusted me to work on meaningful tasks. That kind of environment made all the difference and gave me confidence for my master’s degree in environmental Transitions, with a set of green skills and professional competencies to drive sustainable and meaningful environmental policies. I joined FEE as a Communication Intern in January 2026 as part of my postgraduate internship, with the goal of gaining practical experience in effectively communicating sustainability education. In this role, I support the communication and coordination of various programmes while creating engaging content to expand their reach. Through this work, I am gaining valuable insight into how global environmental education initiatives engage diverse audiences and create meaningful impact.

Through this experience, I am developing skills in project management and sustainability communication, strengthening my commitment to pursuing a career in this field, as I believe raising awareness about sustainability is essential in rebuilding our connection to the environment and one another.

Alessandro Venti

I joined FEE in 2021 as a Green Key International Administrative Intern after completing a Master’s degree in Resource Economics and Sustainable Development. During my internship, I helped shape materials for the GAIA 20:30 Biodiversity Campaign, contributed to the co-development of the HCMI 2.0 tool for GHG emissions accounting in hospitality in line with the GHG Protocol, and maintained sustainability data of applicant establishments within the organisation’s database. The experience gave me a solid understanding of certification requirements and sustainability challenges in the tourism sector, while also connecting me to FEE’s global network. It was my first professional experience abroad and truly kickstarted my career in sustainability in a warm, international, and stimulating environment, for which I remain very grateful. After my internship, I am currently working as ESG specialist, supporting companies and public bodies improve their sustainability performance as a consultant. My experience at FEE has been instrumental in learning how to prepare thorough work to withstand the scrutiny of certification bodies, while achieving real sustainability impact and behaviour change in the organisations I work with.”
